Fariha Anwar’s Suffering: A Living Tragedy
Karim Khan | Sep 2 2009

This brief post is meant to catch the attention of philanthropic readers over one of hundreds of thousands of cases in poverty and disease that continue to paralyze the lives of our country’s very own citizens. In the esteemed daily The News, Saadia Khalid (thanks to her) reported the case of a widow Fariha Anwar who is suffering from bone-marrow cancer and needs only 60, 000 rupees to treat her condition but whose poverty doesn’t allow her to seek treatment. Fariha’s two sons died in a road accident in 2008 and now all she has is her 5-year old daughter – the sole purpose of her will to live.

What makes Fariha’s story more tragic is the fact that she owns a Master Degree in English and is capable of living independently and could afford treating her medical condition. But she has been unable to find a job. She has visited many public and private offices to get a job but in vain. As she found out, and something well-known already as a rule of thumb, a strong reference is needed in order to get employment. This marks the edge of existence – to deserve and not to have. Through the said post, Fariha has requested help of any/all caring humans to save her because she has a daughter to bring up.
